As a nurse I am responsible for yearly check ups for people with long term health conditions, such as heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes. I do a lot of sexual health appointments – these include contraception advice and checks, smears as well as supporting a doctor for an implant or coil clinic – these are long term devices to prevent pregnancy. I immunise all ages for travel, as well as baby immunisations as part of the childhood immunisation programme. But my favourite part of my job is woundcare which I do a lot of – I assess, treat and (hopefully) heal wounds. I’m also specially trained to apply compression bandages to help slow healing wounds to heal quicker.

I am senior partner in my practice, which means I’m the boss. I have another partner who co-owns it with me. Unlike other parts of the health service GPs are actually technically self-employed and run their practices under a separate NHS contract. We get paid by the NHS to provide services to the patients registered with the practice. For each patient we get about £130 a year to see them as often as they want/ need to do tests, checks, referrals etc. Out of that money I have to pay my staff, run the building (heat, light, stationary etc.) etc.

I run the practice, employ clinical, management and administrative staff to see patients. So I have a team of GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, receptionists, prescription clerks and managers to do all this.

I also see patients of course.

My typical day includes seeing patients in surgery, making phone calls, home visits, meetings, signing prescriptions and teaching medical students and junior doctors. I also have management responsibilities shared with the other GPs I work to ensure the practice as a business runs smoothly – I’ve put more detail in my profile.

As a Practice Manager I am responsible for everything except the actual clinical work, although I do have to plan and implement new medical services we may be offering. Some practices employ external companies to do the payroll and things like H&S or HR but at my practice we do not so I have to do all of these things. Some Practices also have a deputy manager to assist in the role but unfortunately we do not have one.
